FRASASSI CAVES - VOLENDO VIAGGI

The Frasassi Caves are a remarkable karst cave system in the municipality of Genga (Italy), in the province of Ancona, Marche. They are among the most famous show caves in Italy. The caves, discovered by a group of Ancona speleologists between 1948 and 1971 are situated 7 km south of Genga, near the civil parish of San Vittore and the Genga-San Vittore railway station (Rome-Ancona line). Rich in water, the cave system is particulararly well endowed with stalactites and stalagmites.
Below we present some of guided tours that can be made inside the caves.

GUIDED TOURS ''ABYSS ANCONA''
A walk of about 1 hour and 15 minutes accessibile to everybody at a temperature of 14 degrees constant all the year round. We recommend to use comfortable shoes and a sweatshirt during the summer months.

ABYSS ANCONA
The Abyss Anconais the first part of the cave and the researchers gave to it the name of their city.
it is a big hollow, perhaps one of the bigger hollow in Europe and in the world: 180 m. long, 120 m. large and 200 m. high. At the end of the abyss it is possible to see a caotic hoard of blocks, results of movements and fallings down from time immemorial that gave origin to the abyss.

CRYSTALLIZED LAKE

Looking down on the right it possible to see the "Paradise corner" and on high on the left wall there is the "bacon's slice".Beginning the tour, down on the right there is a little crystallized lake born after the saturation of a lake's basin for the calcium carbonate action, following the water level's change and evaporation during the time.On this crystallisation there is a ferric stalagmite 2 m. high. On the side of it has been origin a white concretion. Looking at it in prospective, the partuculary form wheted the speleologists imagination that have called it "devil with candle".
NIAGARA
The tourist can be struck by another detail: Niagara. It is a white flow of pure calcite and with notable dimensions. The end of the abyss is represented by a vault reduction. Then the 2nd hall begins and its name is "two hundred hall".
LITTLE FAIRY'S CASTLE
On the lake bank the little fairy castle rise up. It was so called for its profile made up of spires and pinnacles.
THE GIANTS
In the middle of the hall the group of millenary stalagmites called "the giants" dominates.
Considering the diameter (from 2 mt to 5 mt) and the height (from 1,50 mt to 20 mt), they are certainly the most impressive stalagmites of the cave. From this point of view, looking at the abyss of Ancona it is possible to see the natural mouth through which the first speleologist let themselves down the complex hypogeum on 29th Sept. 1971 and announced to the world their discovery. "Albo signando lapilla".
GUIDED TOUR
''200 HALL''
A walk of about 1 hour and 15 minutes accessibile to everybody at a temperature of 14 degrees constant all the year round. We recommend to use comfortable shoes and a sweatshirt during the summer months.

200 HALL
The name derives from the hall overall length (about 200m).ù
WITCH CASTLE
At the beginnig the visitor will find some strange reddish concretions. One of these has its origin from a fallen rock of the vault. It is made up by stalagmites that hav ethe form of spires. Growing up one of these spires reached a stalactite and formes a "Colulmn". That group of concretions has been called "Red Castle" or "Witch Castle".
BARBARA HALL
Getting over the obelisk, on the left there is a shaft that is the entrance of the Barbara Hall.
OBELISK
On the light vault a stalactite 7.40 m long called "the sword of Damocle" and communication trenches connecting upstairs cave floors. In front of the tourist (in march way) there is a signle and impressive "obelisk". It has always been a datum point for all the speleologists that have been operating here.
This stalagmite has as base a wide rock fallen from the ceiling and it is about 15 m. high.On the side, in a cave's corner, the toursit find a colourful palette: white, ferric red, pink with light grey dued to the manganese oxide.

GUIDED TOUR ''GRAN CANYON''
A walk of about 1 hour and 15 minutes accessibile to everybody at a temperature of 14 degrees constant all the year round. We recommend to use comfortable shoes and a sweatshirt during the summer months.

GRAN CANYON
This hall is so called for the presence of clefts. At the end of fessures there are holes completely full of water because they are near to the water-bearing stratum. It is the Sentino river that passes outside justy on the side of Frasassi gorge.
PIPES
Pipes are a group of parallel stalactites that form an organ and if lightly touched, they give different soft sounds.
CANDLE'S HALL
On the shore of the lake there are a large number of thin stalagmites that form the precious Candle's hall, where it is possible to observe the nature's eccentric works.
